Homework

We appreciate that children are tired when they have had a full day in school, and we recognise that many of our pupils have interests and hobbies outside school, so we are grateful when you are able to set aside time to help support your child's learning at home.

We use seesaw as a method of paperless communication, as well as sending home paper copies of any homework, and your child will have brought their unique login QR code home with them in the Autumn term.

Weekly homework typically consists of spellings which are introduced on a Monday, for a test the following Monday; and times tables which are sent home on a Friday for a test on the following Friday.  For children who need a bit of extra help to become more fluent with their reading, they will be given a book from our school reading scheme (Oxford Reading Tree) to bring home to read to parents / carers.

Spellings are organised in 'family' groups concentrating on a specific pattern for the week; and times tables follow a proven sequence where one multiplication table, and it's inverse (division) is practised so that the children can answer 30 (or more) out of 40 questions in 4 minutes.  When they have achieved this target, they will move onto the next times table.  We encourage a range of multisensory approaches to learning spelling and times tables, so that they are embedded in the children's memories.

When we visited Rhos library in October 2022, all our Year 4 pupils became library members, so please remember that your child can borrow books free of charge from the library for them to enjoy at home.  The value of reading cannot be underestimated, so we are thrilled to hear the children telling us that they enjoy having stories read to them at home, or when we hear that they have been practising their reading with their parents, grandparents and siblings.

We know that lots of our children enjoy playing computer games during their relaxation time, so we are happy to recommend some free apps that they can use to practise the key skills of spelling and maths!
